Russia Plans Diamond-Cutting Cluster in Smolensk

Russian diamond miningcompany Alrosa is increasing its focus on strengthening the country’sdomestic diamond-cutting sector through new industry investments and workforcetraining programs.

During a recent visit toSmolensk, Alrosa CEO PavelMarinychev met with regional officials todiscuss plans aimed at expanding Russia’s diamond processing capabilities andbuilding a regional cutting cluster centered in the city.

The meeting took placeat the Kristall Production Association, a major diamond-cutting facility owned by Alrosa that haslong been a key part of Russia’s diamond manufacturing industry.

Partnership With Regional Authorities and FinanceMinistry

The discussionsincluded Vasily Anokhin, Governor of the SmolenskOblast, and Deputy Chairman of the regionalgovernment Pyotr Ilyukhun.

According to Alrosa,the company is working in partnership with the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation and regional authorities to develop policies that supportthe diamond-cutting sector.

Key areas ofcooperation include:

Alrosa officials saythe goal is to establish Smolensk as a central hub for Russia’sdiamond-cutting industry.

CEO Pavel Marinychevnoted that developing a domestic diamond-cutting cluster could play animportant role in strengthening Russia’s broader industrial capacity while alsoexpanding value-added production within the diamond sector.

The KristallProduction Association is expected to serve as a technological base for theinitiative due to its long experience in diamond processing and jewellerymanufacturing.

Training Programs for the Next Generation ofDiamond Specialists

As part of theinitiative, the Smolensk RegionalTechnological Academy has launchedspecialized training programs focused on diamond cutting and jewellerymanufacturing.

The education programaims to develop skilled professionals for the diamond industry by combiningacademic learning with hands-on training.

Alrosa is supportingthe program by offering employment contracts to graduates, helpingstudents transition directly into jobs within the diamond manufacturing sector.

Internship Opportunities at Kristall Factory

The training programalso includes internships at the Kristall Production Association,allowing students to gain real-world experience in diamond processing andjewellery production.

According to thecompany, 23 students are expected to complete internships at the facilitythis year, providing early career exposure to advanced diamond-cuttingtechnologies.
